Miguel

Miguel is the Spanish form of Michael, a name carried into Spanish through Latin. Its short meaning takes the shape of a question rather than a title: who is like God. The words form a challenge. Tradition attaches them to the archangel Michael, and Spanish kept the sense whole while it reshaped the sounds into something softer.

In Spanish the name belongs first to Miguel de Cervantes, who published the second part of Don Quixote in 1615 and laid one of the cornerstones of the language. Few first names sit that close to the start of a national literature.
