Jack

Jack began as a nickname. In medieval England, John was so common that people trimmed and reshaped it, and the form Jankin, later Jackin, settled into the single syllable we know. John itself reaches back to the Hebrew Yohanan, meaning God is gracious. So this thoroughly English name rests on an old Hebrew blessing.

The name grew larger than one person. By the sixteenth century Jack had become a plain word for an ordinary man, which is why English still keeps lumberjack, jack of all trades, and the jack in a deck of cards. To carry it is to carry a name that once meant simply a fellow.

In a Polish school register, Jack now sits among the Kacpers and Antonis, a foreign import on the class list. The spelling stays English, and so does the sound. Underneath, the meaning holds steady: God is gracious, bóg jest łaskawy.
