Eric

Eric grew from Germanic roots and traveled north, where Old Norse speakers said it as Eiríkr. Its two parts point toward "ever" and "ruler," and together they give the short meaning: ever ruler. The oldest famous bearer earns that reading. Erik the Red, the Norse outlaw who reached Greenland around 985, held no crown, yet the idea of enduring rule clung to the name.
