Meaning & Origin

What Leonarda means

Where Leonarda comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Leonarda is built from two Germanic pieces. "Leo" gives the lion, and "hard" gives the sense of brave or strong. Read together they come out as something like brave lion, or in Polish silny jak lew. The masculine form Leonard settled into common use first, and Leonarda stands beside it as the feminine version.

The lion did most of the work in how people heard this name. A woman called Leonarda carried a creature of courage in what she was called. Saint Leonard of Noblac, honoured in Poland on 6 November, gave the male form a name-day and a patron for prisoners and for women in childbirth. Leonarda borrowed that spot on the calendar in many parishes.

The name has grown rare. On a Polish class register today it would stand out at once. What it says stays plain: brave lion, silny jak lew.
