Kora

Kora comes from Greek. The word korē meant maiden, a young unmarried woman, and it was also a title of Persephone, whom Greek myth called simply the Girl before Hades took her. That older sense stays inside the name. The Polish glosses keep it plain: dziewczę and panna, maiden and young woman.

In Poland Kora reads as whole and finished on its own. It also works as a short form of Kornelia, so a girl entered as Kornelia in the school register might answer to Kora among friends. The two names travel together without meaning the same thing.

The tie to Persephone gives Kora a documented literary past rather than a folk tale spun after the fact. She was the maiden who gathered flowers before the myth turned dark. A name can hold that much and still fit a two-year-old. Kora does. What it says, plainly, is maiden.
