What Kamilla means

Where Kamilla comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Kamilla comes from Latin. In ancient Rome a camillus, and in the feminine a camilla, was a freeborn child who served a priest at sacrifices and other rites. That role hands the name its plain meaning: an attendant at religious ceremony.

The oldest famous Camilla belongs to Virgil. In the Aeneid she is a warrior maiden, fast enough to run over a field of grain without bending the stalks. So a word once fixed to a temple servant was passed to a fighter, and it kept moving from there.

In Polish records Kamilla stands beside its shorter variant Kamila and its masculine counterpart Kamil. A teacher marking a school register is far likelier to find a Kamila than the double-l spelling. That extra l, though, is what holds the form closest to the Latin camilla.
