Ismena

Ismena comes from Greek, and the English sense attached to it is "knowledge." Its clearest bearer is Ismene, sister of Antigone in Sophocles' play, the cautious sister who lives on when Antigone does not. The name reached Polish along that Greek line, more through literature than through any saint.

In Polish the name is read differently, as silna, mocna, strong. That sense arrived later than the Greek root, and it sits beside the older idea of knowing rather than pushing it out. Two meanings, one name.

On a class register in a Polish szkoła, Ismena stands out among the Zuzannas and Julias, uncommon enough that a teacher might pause over it during roll call. It has no everyday diminutive of its own. What a child keeps, from the first form at the urząd onward, is the full Greek shape: Ismena.
