Innocenty

Innocenty traces back to the Latin innocens, formed from the negative in- and the verb nocere, meaning to harm. The word named a quality, harmless, long before it named a person. English keeps that same root in innocuous, and even nuisance grew from nocere.

The name reached Poland through the Latin church, where a line of popes carried the Latin Innocentius. A boy called Innocenty answers to the roll in a class register, one Latin adjective turned into a Polish given name. Its feminine variant is Innocenta.

The Polish sense reads as niewinny and prawy, innocent and upright. That second meaning, upright, attached to the name later, after generations of churchmen wore it. The root holds steady, in- plus nocere, meaning not to harm.
