Gerald

Gerald grew out of two Germanic roots, ger meaning "spear" and wald meaning "to rule." Put together they give the short meaning that still trails the name: power of the spear. The Normans carried it into England, where it settled among the English and later found a second home in German-speaking lands.

One early bearer makes that meaning legible. Gerald of Wales, the medieval churchman and chronicler known in Latin as Giraldus Cambrensis, wrote about his travels through Wales in the twelfth century and left a record historians still read. His name did not soften into pet forms the way so many did. Gerald stays Gerald.

That plainness is part of its character. On a Polish klasa register the name reads without ornament, a single clear form with no nickname trailing after it. The Polish gloss keeps the martial sense intact: władający oszczepem, the one who governs the spear.
