Gabriele

Gabriele reaches back to Hebrew, to the root that joins gever, strength, with El, God. The result reads as a small statement: God is my strength. The name belongs to the archangel Gabriel, the messenger who appears in the Hebrew Bible and later announces births. From that source it spread into many languages and split along the way.

In Italy, Gabriele is a man's name. The poet Gabriele D'Annunzio carried it through the early twentieth century. In German-speaking countries the same spelling belongs to women, so the ending settles its gender by country rather than by sound.
