Francisco

Francisco comes from the Latin Franciscus, and its plain meaning is a Frenchman, one of the Franks. The Franks were a Germanic people, and their name attached itself to freedom in the medieval world; to be a Frank often meant to be a free person. So the Polish sense of the name, człowiek wolny, sits beside that older reading of a Frankish man.

In Spain the name grew far past its roots. Spanish speakers made it their own, shortening and softening it, until Francisco belonged as much to Sevilla as to any Frankish memory. Saint Francis of Assisi, Francesco in his own tongue, carried the Latin form across Europe, and Spain answered with Francisco.
