Ulyana

Ulyana reaches Polish ears through Russian and Ukrainian, where it settled long ago as the familiar form of Juliana. The deeper root is Latin, the name of the gens Julia, and from that family line comes the sense of "youthful." So the meaning młodzieńcza did not grow from any Slavic word. It arrived by descent from Julius.

That descent matters, because Ulyana looks and feels fully Slavic while carrying a Roman ancestry inside it. Ukrainian and Russian speakers wore down the longer Juliana until this softer shape remained. The name has real bearers to point to: Ulyana Lopatkina, the Mariinsky ballerina, gave it a face known well beyond the two cultures that raised it.
