What Neonila means

Where Neonila comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Neonila begins in Greek, in the word néos, meaning new. The name reached Polish through the Orthodox Christian east, where it has long belonged to Ukrainian families. Its short Polish meaning stays close to the source: nowa, new.

Behind the name stands a martyr. Saint Neonilla, wife of Terence, died with her children during the persecution under the emperor Decius around the year 250, and the Orthodox calendar keeps her feast on 28 October. Through her the name traveled east and stayed there, kept alive by women in Ukrainian and Russian-speaking communities long after it faded elsewhere.

On a Polish class register today, Neonila sits apart from the Zuzannas and Julias around it. The spelling is unusual here. A teacher might pause on it once. The meaning behind it does not change: néos, new, the root that also gives us the word neon. So the name still says what it always said. Neonila means new.
