Maryam

Maryam begins in Hebrew, as Miriam, and finds its cultural home in Arabic. This is the form used across the Muslim world, the name of Mary, mother of Jesus, held in reverence far beyond her own century.

The old glosses point toward the sea. One reading gives "drop of the sea," another leans toward bitterness, and scholars still disagree about the Hebrew root. The sense of "drop of the sea" was attached later, a poetic reading laid over a word whose first meaning has grown uncertain. None of these versions cancels the others.

In the Quran, Maryam is the only woman named directly, and the nineteenth chapter carries her name. That reach across languages is one few names can match.

On a Polish class register, Maryam sits near the Marias and Marysias. They share the same Hebrew source but set out by separate roads. It is short. The ending stays open, the final -am of Maryam.
