Gizela

Germanic at root, from a word for "pledge" or "hostage". About 5,000 Polish women carry it, but no girls were given it last year: meeting a Gizela today is memorable, and likely someone from an older generation.

What Gizela means

Where Gizela comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Gizela grew from Germanic soil, from the old word gīsal, which meant a pledge or a hostage. In early medieval Europe those two senses sat close together. A hostage was a living guarantee, a noble child handed between rival houses so that a treaty would hold. To name a daughter after that word was to name her a promise kept.

One bearer gave the name its shine. Blessed Gizela of Bavaria, sister of Emperor Henry II, married King Stephen I of Hungary around the year 996 and helped bring Christianity to the Magyars. Her name traveled east with her.

The Polish spelling softened the harder Germanic sound. Gizela reads gently here. The meaning underneath stays sharp, though: zakładnik, przysięga, hostage and oath. You still meet it on a name-day list at the urząd, an older woman signing a form. The word behind it is gīsal, a pledge.
