Antonella

Antonella comes from the Roman family name Antonius, carried into Italian as Antonio and then softened by the diminutive suffix that also produces Antonello and, in its feminine turn, Antonella. The root is Latin, though what Antonius meant to the Romans who first bore it is unknown, and scholars have long suspected an older Etruscan source behind it.

The gloss you meet on a Polish name site, bezcenna and wspaniała, priceless and praiseworthy, came later. Latin holds no word inside Antonius that means either. The sense grew instead from affection and from folk association, the way a family gives a name meaning after saying it a thousand times. So the meaning is real. Families pinned it on the name; they did not find it in the Latin.

In Italy the name stayed close to Saint Anthony, whose feast falls on 13 June and anchors the imieniny a Polish Antonella can share. Picture a class register where Antonella sits a line above Antonina, both traced to the same Roman name.

In Polish the name grew no diminutive of its own. It arrives already small, already Antonella.
