Anastasiya

Anastasiya begins in Greek, in the word anastasis, resurrection. Early Christians gave it to daughters as a plain statement of faith in rising again, and it traveled east, where Russian and Ukrainian families made it one of the names they returned to most. The Polish form is Anastazja.

Saint Anastasia of Sirmium carried it into the church calendar, and her feast on 25 December tied the name to the days around Christmas. Centuries later, Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Romanova gave it a second fame. She died young, yet the rumors that she had escaped kept the name moving through novels and films for decades.

The Polish sense, zmartwychwstanie, keeps that first meaning without softening it. A girl named Anastazja on a class register sits among the Zosias and Julias with something older standing behind her. It means resurrection, the same sense the Greek anastasis carried.
