Alma comes from the Latin adjective almus, feminine alma, meaning nourishing or fostering. It belonged first to the vocabulary of care, the word Romans used for a goddess who fed and sheltered. The phrase alma mater, nourishing mother, still holds that Latin sense of a place that raises you.

As a given name, Alma found its warmest home in Scandinavia. In Sweden it has ranked among the most popular names for baby girls in recent years, a short word that Swedish parents took to easily. The meaning attached to it, nourishing, fostering, kind, reads less like a definition and more like a wish.
