What Aidana means

Where Aidana comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Aidana comes from the Turkic-speaking world, and it belongs mostly to girls in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Its first part, ai, means moon. The second, dana, means wise, a word Turkic languages borrowed from Persian dāna. Read the halves together and you get the short meaning: wise moon, mądry księżyc.

The moon element ai is one of the busiest building blocks in Kazakh naming. It opens Aigul, Aisulu, and Aigerim, and it keeps going well past those. Aidana takes the same opening and puts wisdom on the other side of it, so the moon in the name is a knowing one rather than a merely bright one.

In a Polish class register the name would sit among the Amelias and Zuzannas, foreign on first read and simple to spell once someone has said it. It has no place in the Polish name-day calendar, so an imieniny for an Aidana here stays a private arrangement. The two parts hold their meaning plainly. Ai for the moon, dana for the wise.
