Felipe

Felipe is the Spanish form of a name that Latin carried as Philippus, and the meaning sits right on the surface: friend of horses. That is not a later gloss stitched on afterward. The name was built from the idea of loving horses, and Spanish kept the sense while reshaping the sound, softening Philippus into Felipe.

Spain gave the name to its rulers. Felipe II governed an empire in the sixteenth century, and the current king, Felipe VI, took the throne in 2014.
