Evgenii

The name comes from Greek. Eugenios joins eu, meaning well, to genes, meaning born, so the whole word reads as well-born, or noble. Evgenii is how Russian carried that ancient term forward, and the association has stayed Russian for a long time.

Nobility here started as a claim about birth. Over the centuries it loosened into something about bearing and character too, the szlachetnie urodzony that a Polish reader will recognize. A person can be well-born in the second sense without the first.

Pushkin gave the name its most famous literary owner in Eugene Onegin, where Evgenii is restless and often cold. The Soviet poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko carried the same name into the twentieth century and read his verse to stadium crowds. Two very different men, one root.

On a Polish class register the name looks foreign beside the Jakubs and Piotrs. It points to a Russian household or Russian roots. The meaning underneath holds steady: well-born, noble.
