Brandon

Brandon comes from Old English, the Germanic tongue of early England, built from brōm, the broom shrub, and dūn, a hill. So the name once meant a broom-covered hill, a real place before it belonged to any person. It named land first. From there it became a surname, and only much later a given name.

For centuries English families carried Brandon to mark where they came from, not what they were called at birth. Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk and companion to Henry VIII, wore it as a surname in the sixteenth century. Its move onto a baby was a later shift.

Polish readers meet a second sense: miecz, płomień, sword and flame. That reading was attached later, drawn from the Norse brandr, a blade or a fire, close in sound yet grown from a different root. A Polish teacher scanning a class register might rest a moment on Brandon among the Kacpers and Szymons. The name still points back to that broom-covered hill.
