Aya

Aya begins in Hebrew. In the Bible the name Ayah belongs to a man in the book of Genesis and reappears in Chronicles, and the same Hebrew word names a bird of prey, a kite or falcon wheeling over the hills of the Levant. It crosses borders easily.

In Arabic the same syllables become آية, aya, the ordinary word for a sign and the term for a single verse of the Quran. From that Arabic root comes the meaning most people repeat when they meet the name: miracle, sign. That sense was attached through Arabic rather than carried from the Hebrew original, where the bird came first.

Japanese families know Aya too, written with characters for colour or woven silk, so one spelling can hold three languages at once. On a Polish class register the name reads as clear and unfussy. It has no diminutive of its own and no variant to hide behind. Aya stands as it is, three letters that mean sign.
