What Atanazy means

Where Atanazy comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Atanazy comes from the Greek Athanasios. The name joins a-, meaning without, to thanatos, death. Put together it means immortal, in Polish nieśmiertelny. The sense is bold for a person. A human being does not outlast death, yet the name insists otherwise.

The most documented bearer is Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, the fourth-century bishop who argued against Arius over the divinity of Christ. His name attached itself to the Athanasian Creed, a text still read in some churches. Through him the Greek word travelled into Latin, and later into Polish as Atanazy.

In a Polish class register the name stands out among the Piotrs and Jakubs. The imieniny falls on 2 May, shared with the same Athanasius of Alexandria. A child answering to Atanazy carries a Greek promise of no death, spelled the Polish way.
