What Amaranta means

Where Amaranta comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Amaranta grows from Greek "amarantos," unfading. The word joins "a," not, to "marainein," to wither. The Greeks gave that name to the amaranth, a flower that keeps its color long after it is cut. Dried, it does not fade. The short meaning sits right on the surface: unfading.

The name settled in Italian and Spanish, where the amaranth is a common garden and field plant. Its best-known bearer is fictional. Gabriel García Márquez gave the name to a Buendía daughter, and a generation later to Amaranta Úrsula, in "One Hundred Years of Solitude" (1967). Both hold their place across the whole novel.

In Polish the sense reads as niewygasająca, niezniszczalna. On a class register the name would stand alone, with no diminutive to shorten it. What stays is the Greek root: unfading.
