What Zhi means
Where Zhi comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Zhi reaches Poland from far outside the Slavic world. Its roots lie in Chinese, where pinyin romanization can spell several different written names with the same three letters. One character, 志 (zhì), means will, purpose, and aspiration. Another, 智 (zhì), means wisdom and intellect. The meaning a Polish clerk might write beside the name follows from those characters: mądrość.
Zhi carries no Polish diminutive and no variant. It stands alone. A single syllable, it looks the same on a school class register as on a form at the urząd.
Because the meaning comes straight from the written characters, wisdom and ambition are not a gloss added later. They belong to the name at its source. A child called Zhi wears a word that in Chinese means will, or wisdom, depending on which character the family chose.
How many people are named Zhi
1 in 928095 men in Poland is named Zhi. 29 people carry it in the 2025 register: rank #7771 among male names.
