Yusup

Yusup comes from the Hebrew Yosef, a name built on a verb meaning to add. The reading passed down is "god will add," a hope for one more child after the first. Polish renders it "bóg (przy)doda."

The name traveled into Arabic as Yusuf, and it kept its standing there. The Quran gives its twelfth sura to the prophet Yusuf, whose story of the well and the coat runs among the longest it tells. Yusup is the spelling that settled across the Caucasus and Turkic-speaking lands, closer to how the name sounds in those tongues.

It arrives without diminutives. No Yus, no soft ending to fall back on. On a Polish class register the four letters stand as they are, Yusup, the same shape a teacher reads at roll call. The origin stays visible in it: Yosef, the wish that god will add.
