Xueqi

Xueqi comes from Chinese, and its origin sits outside the Slavic and Latin roots that fill most Polish name books. It is usually written with two characters. The first, 雪, means snow. The second, 琪, names a fine jade, a stone prized for clear colour.

Put together, the two syllables read as snow and precious jade. The pairing turns up often in girls' names across Chinese-speaking families, where a jade character signals worth and a snow character adds brightness. Snow here reads as pale and clean rather than cold.

Xueqi has no Polish name-day. You will not find it in the parish calendar, so a child who carries it in a Warsaw class register marks an imieniny by choice or not at all. What stays fixed is the reading of the characters: snow, and a fine jade.
