Wenanta

Wenanta comes from Latin. Behind it sits the verb venari, to hunt, and its present participle venans, venantis, which gives the plain sense "hunting." The masculine form is Venantius, borne in the sixth century by the poet Venantius Fortunatus, who wrote Latin hymns still sung in churches. Wenanta is the feminine shaped from that same root.

The name is rare in Poland. A girl called Wenanta might be the only one on a school register for years at a stretch, her name read out once and then remembered.

The sense of the hunt in the name is old and literal, not a later gloss. It points to the chase, the tracking, the patience of someone who waits. That meaning reached Polish through the Latin of the Church, where saints named Venantius carried it into calendars and name-day lists. In Polish the short reading stays close: polujący, one who hunts. So a modern bearer holds a word that once described a hunter walking out at dawn, now settled into three syllables on an official form at the urząd.
