What Warcisław means

Where Warcisław comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Warcisław grew out of two Slavic roots. The first is a verb meaning to turn back or restore. The second is "sław", glory. Together they read as "the one who will restore glory", ten, który przywróci sławę. The name makes a promise about repair.

History gives it a real bearer. Warcisław I (c. 1092 to 1135) was the first documented Duke of Pomerania and founder of the Griffin dynasty, the Gryfici. Much of what we know about him survives through accounts of the mission of Otto of Bamberg.

For centuries the name stayed close to Pomerania and its ducal line. It is rare in Poland today. A child named Warcisław stands out on a class register, one old name among the Szymons and Kacpers.

The meaning keeps its shape. Glory here is glory brought back. The roots stay plain: warcić, to restore, and sław, glory.
