Walentyn

Walentyn comes from the Latin Valentinus, a name grown from the verb valere, to be strong and in good health. Valentinus was a real Roman name, carried by early saints of that city. Roman families gave it to a child to mark vigor. Polish keeps that sense plainly: silny, zdrowy.

The name has a feminine side. From the same root come walentyna and the older spelling wałentyna, and from those the short form wala. A boy named Walentyn and a girl named Walentyna share one Latin ancestor and one meaning.

In a Polish class register the name is rare now. A teacher reading it aloud meets something old rather than fashionable. That age is the point. The Latin root valere meant health you could stand on, and the name still reports it: strong, healthy.
