Just twenty women in Poland carry it, and the registers show no newborn girls taking it in recent years. The root is Latin, from the word for a maiden or virgin.
Virginija Pronunciation
What Virginija means
Where Virginija comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.
Virginija comes from Latin. It is the Lithuanian form of Virginia, and behind Virginia stands the Roman family name Verginia. Livy told of a Verginia killed by her own father to spare her from a corrupt magistrate. The name marked a clan before it meant anything about a person.
The link to virgo, virginis, the Latin word for maiden, came later. People heard virgo inside the name and let the sense of maiden settle there. So Virginija reached its plain meaning, maiden or virgin. In Polish that is dziewica.
On a form at the urząd, Virginija stands one letter away from the Polish Wirginia. Say the ending softly. The -ija closes the name the Lithuanian way, and it leads straight back to Latin virgo.
