Vanina

Fewer than two dozen women in Poland carry it, and no newborn has been given it in years: most Poles will never meet one. The root is Hebrew, "god is gracious", and it reaches Poland by way of Italian.

What Vanina means

Where Vanina comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Vanina begins in Hebrew, in the name Yohanan, meaning god is gracious. Italian carried that root forward through Giovanna, and Vanina settled in as a short form used in Corsica and across Italy. The Polish gloss keeps the sense plain: bóg jest łaskawy.

The name has a documented literary bearer. In 1829 Stendhal published the novella Vanina Vanini, whose heroine is a Roman noblewoman who falls for a young revolutionary. That story fixed Vanina in print and gave later readers a face to attach to the sound.

The meaning never drifted far from its root.

On a Polish class register, a Vanina might sit a few lines from a Joanna, and few pupils would guess that both names reach back to the same Hebrew word. One took the long Italian path and one the Polish one. For a girl named Vanina today, the old promise stays legible under the Italian surface: god is gracious, bóg jest łaskawy.
