The name found its most famous carrier in Vaja-Pshavela, the pen name of the Georgian poet Luka Razikashvili, who lived from 1861 to 1915. He took an ordinary word and made it a signature. In the mountains of Pshavi, calling a man vaja was praise for his courage, and the word did double duty as both son and fighter.
