What Usmonjon means

Where Usmonjon comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Usmonjon comes from Central Asia, an Uzbek name built from Usmon and the affectionate suffix `-jon`. Usmon is the Uzbek form of Uthman, the same name Turks know as Osman. The `-jon` ending means something like "dear" or "soul", so the whole reads as "dear Usmon".

The older name underneath holds an unusual sense. Uthman was linked by early Arab lexicographers to the young of the bustard, a heavy ground bird of the steppe. Baby bustard is the gloss that reached the dictionaries. A sense of dignity came later, through the caliph Uthman ibn Affan.

In Uzbekistan the `-jon` names fill any school register. The meaning is odd. Usmonjon belongs there, warm and ordinary, its bird sense long faded from daily speech.

The name has no Polish name-day and no local variant. What it keeps is its two parts: Usmon, the young bustard, and jon, the word for dear.
