What Teimurazi means

Where Teimurazi comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Teimurazi is the Georgian form of Teimuraz, the final -i marking the nominative case. The name goes back to Tahmuras, a legendary king in the Persian Shahnameh, and its sense has been given as strong body, a brave hero. Its roots lie outside the Slavic and Latin sources that most Polish names draw on.

History gives the name a real bearer. Teimuraz I of Kakheti ruled in eastern Georgia and wrote poetry between long wars with Persia. He died a prisoner in 1663. The name held on after the reign ended.

In Poland the name stays rare, and it carries no imieniny of its own. A registrar at the urząd would meet it as something to spell out letter by letter. What travels with it is the old reading of Tahmuras: strong body, a brave hero.
