The meaning widened over time. In Polish the sense reaches past "prosty" toward "szczery" and "uczciwy", plain becoming honest, unadorned becoming sincere. A boy reading his own name off a class register hears something short and old. Latin gave the word, a fifth-century pope gave the name a face, and the meaning still points at one plain idea: simple.
