What Sulpicjusz means

Where Sulpicjusz comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

The name Sulpicjusz reaches back to Latin, to the gens Sulpicia, one of the patrician clans of the Roman Republic. Its short meaning stays close to that source: belonging to the gens Sulpicia. Before it was a personal name, Sulpicius marked a person as one of that family line.

Real people wore it. Servius Sulpicius Rufus served as consul in 51 BC and traded letters with Cicero on points of law. A poet named Sulpicia left elegies that survive in the Corpus Tibullianum, among the few Latin love poems we have from a woman's hand. Later, Sulpicius Severus wrote the Life of Saint Martin of Tours and gave the old Roman name a Christian afterlife.

Polish keeps the shape of such names by fitting the Latin root with an -usz ending. Sulpicjusz is rare here. A boy who has it might be the only such entry on a class register, or the single one at the urząd. The name still means what it meant in Rome: one who belongs to the gens Sulpicia.
