What Sulisława means

Where Sulisława comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Sulisława is a Slavic name built from two old roots. The second, "-sław", means glory or fame, and it appears across Slavic names from Bogusław to Stanisław. The first element carries the sense of "better", which gives the whole name its short meaning: better glory.

The masculine form, Sulisław, belonged to a real man. He led a division of Małopolska knights at the Battle of Legnica on 9 April 1241. The chronicler Jan Długosz records that Sulisław took command after his brother Włodzimierz, the Kraków voivode, fell at Chmielnik. Sulisław died at Legnica against the Mongol army. His name outlived him.

Sulisława is the feminine form, rarer than its masculine twin. It reads today as an old name, one a teacher might slow down over while reading a class register. The meaning stays plain enough: a glory meant to be the better kind.
