Stojgniew is a Slavic name built from two roots, in the old dithematic pattern that gave Poland Zbigniew and Bogusław. The first part, "stoj-", comes from the verb "to stand", the Polish "stać". The second part, "gniew", means anger or wrath, and it is the same element that closes Zbigniew. Read together, the medieval sense is "standing anger", in Polish "nieustający gniew".
That anger was no flaw to early Slavs. The -gniew names belonged to a fighting nobility, where wrath meant resolve and a refusal to yield. A Stojgniew was a man whose anger held its ground.
