What Zoé means

Where Zoé comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Zoé begins in Greek, in the single word zōē, meaning life. When Greek-speaking Jews translated the Hebrew scriptures into the Septuagint, they gave Eve the name Zoe, the mother of the living, so the name and the idea of life sat close from the start. Christian Rome kept it. A woman called Zoe of Rome died a martyr under Diocletian, and her name entered the church calendar, where it still marks a name-day.

The French gave Zoé its accent. With the acute é it spread through French families across the nineteenth century, and from there it reached Poland.

On a Polish class register the é often loses its mark, and a girl sits as Zoe among the Zuzannas and Zofias. The spelling shifts. The meaning does not: zōē, life.
