What Zita means

Where Zita comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Zita traces back to Latin, through a Tuscan word for a young girl or maiden. The meaning stayed close to that source: a young woman, a girl. Its plainness is part of the history.

The name gained a face in the thirteenth century. Zita of Lucca went into domestic service at twelve and stayed with one household for nearly fifty years. She was so loved in Tuscany that Dante named her in the Divine Comedy soon after her death. The Church canonized her in 1696, and she became patron of maids and household servants. Her feast falls on 27 April, when Lucca still bakes bread and brings flowers to San Frediano.

Centuries later another Zita reached a palace. Zita of Bourbon-Parma, born in Tuscany in 1892, became the last Empress of Austria before her death in 1989.

On a Polish class register, Zita is short and quick in the roll. The name keeps its old sense: a young girl, a maiden.
