What Zakharii means

Where Zakharii comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Zakharii comes from Hebrew, from Zekharyah, which means god remembers, or in Polish jahwe pamięta. The name belonged first to a Hebrew prophet whose short book sits near the close of the minor prophets. In Ukrainian speech the old Hebrew settled into Zakharii, and it is by that Ukrainian coloring that Polish readers now meet the name.

Polish keeps its own form, Zachariasz, the version found in old parish registers and among the carved figures of a Kraków szopka. Set beside it, Zakharii reads as the eastern cousin, closer to Kyiv than to Kraków. Both hold the same idea, that a name can be a small act of remembering.

The meaning is not decoration. To be named Zakharii is to wear a sentence, god remembers, folded into a few syllables. On a form filled out at a Polish urząd, the Ukrainian spelling stands out in the register, and it still unpacks to jahwe pamięta.
