Zafarbek

Zafarbek is a compound name from Central Asia, and each half has its own history. Zafar comes from Arabic, where it means victory or triumph. Bek is a Turkic honorific for a lord or chief, the same title that became "bey" in Ottoman Turkish. Set side by side, the two give the meaning recorded here: victorious lord.

Zafar stands on its own as a name across the Persian and Arabic world. Bek does similar work as an ending, attaching to other roots to mark rank, so a boy called Zafarbek shares his second element with names built the same way. The name is most common among Uzbek families today.

Bek means lord. On a Polish szkoła register, Zafarbek would sit among far more familiar entries, its two parts unplaceable to most classmates. Both roots stay legible even so: Zafar for victory, bek for the lord who holds it.
