What Żanet means

Where Żanet comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Żanet reached Polish through Latin, where the name Iohannes held a Hebrew phrase meaning god is gracious. French speakers softened Iohannes into Jean, then shaped the feminine Jeanne. A small affectionate form, Jeannette, travelled outward until Polish spelling caught it as Żanet. The variant żaneta sits right beside it.

Latin did not invent the meaning. It carried the sense from Hebrew and passed it on. The English John, the Italian Giovanni, and the Polish Jan all descend from that same Latin Iohannes. Żanet keeps the meaning while wearing a French coat and a Polish spelling.

On a class register, Żanet and Żaneta can appear a line apart, two spellings of one name. A teacher reads both aloud and lands on the same person. The sense stays put: god is gracious.
