What Yulianna means

Where Yulianna comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Yulianna comes from the Latin Julius, the name of the Roman gens Julia, and it reaches Polish as the eastern spelling of Julianna. The short meaning recorded for it, "youthful; of the Julian family," points to that clan first. Belonging came before any single trait. The idea of youthfulness attached itself to the Julian name later.

The form Yulianna carries a Russian coloring. In the Orthodox calendar the name is tied to Juliana of Nicomedia, an early Christian martyr venerated on more than one date across the eastern churches. Through that veneration the name moved west and settled among Polish families with eastern ties.

At home it wears down to something shorter. Julka answers at the school register; Jula answers everywhere else. The masculine Julian shares the same root and, in some parishes, the same imieniny. Whatever spelling a family chooses, Yulianna still means one who belongs to the house of Julius.
