Yevgen comes from the Greek Eugenios, a name built from eu, good, and genes, born. The literal sense is well-born, or noble. Two roots settle the matter.
In Ukrainian use the name took the shape Yevgen, and it stays close to its cousins elsewhere: the Polish Eugeniusz, the English Eugene, all leaning on the same Greek stem. The word travelled from Greek through the Latin Eugenius, a form worn by several early popes, before it reached the Slavic east. Someone called well-born was, in the older reckoning, a person of good stock, a claim about family rather than about conduct.
