Yuting

Yuting comes into a Polish register from Chinese, and it belongs to no Slavic or Latin family. Most often it is written 雨婷, where 雨 means rain and 婷 means graceful or slender. Put the two together and the name reads as graceful rain. It has no Polish twin.

Across Mandarin-speaking families this is a girl's name. The character 婷 once described a woman's poise, the ease of how she stood and moved, so the sense of grace sits in that second syllable rather than in the rain. The first character is plain weather, the kind that falls on fields in spring.

On a class register in a Polish school, Yuting would stand without a name-day beside it, since the calendar of imieniny holds no entry for the form. There is no diminutive to shorten it to, either. A child named Yuting can still hear the two parts, rain and grace.
