The Russian form of Eugenia, built from Greek *eu* "well" and *genes* "born": well-born. Only about 169 women in Poland carry it, and no girl got it last year, so most Poles will never meet one.

What Yevgeniya means

Where Yevgeniya comes from and what it has meant to the people who carry it.

Yevgeniya is the Russian voice of a Greek word. It joins eu, meaning good or well, with genes, meaning born. The plain sense is well-born, and the older form Eugenia stands right behind it as a variant.

Saint Eugenia of Rome gave the name its early Christian footing, and Russian families later shaped Evgenia into the fuller Yevgeniya. The diminutive Zhenya took over for daily use. Same root, closer to home.

Well-born first pointed to lineage, to arriving in a good house. Over time the sense drifted toward character rather than rank. A person of good stock came to mean a person of good making, and the shift happened long after the Greek was set.

On a Polish class register the name usually appears as its western twin, Eugenia, waiting for the teacher to reach the E's. The meaning holds either way: szlachetnie urodzona, well-born.
