Yemiliia

The name Yemiliia grows from the Latin Aemilia, the feminine of the Roman family name Aemilius. In Poland the same root gives Emilia, and its everyday short form Emilka. The masculine line runs alongside it as Emil. Yemiliia is the Ukrainian spelling, the shape the name takes when written in Cyrillic and carried back into Latin letters.

The old Roman meaning points to a rival, someone eager to excel. That sense of striving sat inside the family name long before anyone read tenderness into it.

Ukrainian families brought Yemiliia into Polish registers as neighbours, students, and citizens. On a class list at a Polish school, the name stands one line away from a dozen Emilias, close kin in a different coat. A teacher reading the register meets both at once.
